At 15y, Volleyball achieved my dreams to represent my country- Cuba's captain

28 August 2015

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, August 26, 2015 – It may look like a miracle, when you see a 15y old boy leading his country as a captain, but it is a reality for Luis Elian Estrada who conduct the Cuban team at the current Men's U23 World Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at this age.

The Cuban captain is simply spotlighted at this FIVB prestigious event because he is the youngest player at the competition between the 144 players who represent the 12 participating team. He was born on March 10, 2000 and now playing with some players who were born in 1993.

For a player who is 7y younger than the age permitted for this competition it is was amazing to see a captain at this young age and taking this role for a team like Cubans who successfully lead Pool A of the competition in their ambition to book a semifinal ticket .

Till 4 years ago Elian had no idea about volleyball except some matches he saw in his school when he dreamed to be one day a volleyball player and represent his country. He didn't realise that his dreams will become a reality shortly like this.

One day he was detected by the teacher of physical Education because as he was at least 30 cm taller than his colleagues. He chose him for the school team to start playing his beloved sport at 11. His skills and height allowed him to progress quickly, so that he was selected to the centre of performance as one of the candidates to the youth national team.

At 14y old Estrada's height became 197 cm and he was selected as a candidate for the U19 boys team. Early this year he became 199 cm and selected within the youth and junior teams of Cuba.

He was embarrassed when coach of U23 team Rodolfo Sanchez called him for the U23 team to play in the World Championship in Emirates. He didn't believe that his dreams will by realised quicker than he expected.

Elian Estrada is also a candidate to play at the FIVB Men's U21 World Championship in Mexico next month, where he dreams again to represent his country at the second World Championship in the same year and more important while he is only 15y.

Cuba is considered one of the biggest factories of players all over the World and usually bring young teams to the international event like they did in the 2010 World Championship in Italy when they came with a fantastic young team to claim the silver medal at that time. Their team in Emirates has the youngest age between the participating teams with average 19.4 y.
