Nigeria coach selected Women African Nations' squad

Abuja, Nigeria, September 23, 2017- Nigeria coach Usman Abdalah selected a preliminary squad for the upcoming Women's Volleyball African Nations Championship due to be held in Cameroon October 7 to 14, 2017.


Twenty women players are currently in camp preparation for competition and will be cup shortly to 14 ahead of the competition.


Nigeria Women volleyball team list includes; Umeh Helen- NCS, Promise Mercy - Cyprus, Jalmet Ladi - NIS. Oyearone Verera-London Orcas volleyball club, Dusu Esther -NSC, Ibe Chimdiya       - NSC, Amaonwu Comfort - NSCDC, Nwosu Chimeye- NSCDC, Agera Precillia -NCS, Mary Ali    - Plateau Rocks, Umaru Aisha- NCS, Francis Albertina - NSCDC, Ikhiede Francisca - NCS, Iwobi Kelechi- NCS, Okonma Theresa -NSCDC, John Mary - Kada Stars, Nnachi Chinedu - NA, Achi Sharon- NSCDC, Ifeako Patience - NSCDC, and Ene Odoh - plateau Rocks


Verera Oywarone and Ebele Promise Mercy are the two foreign-based players invited by Coach Usman Abdallah to fortify the team.


The National women volleyball team, which had spent two weeks in camp, are expected to leave the shores of Nigeria on 5 Oct. 2017 for Cameroon.


The African championship will act also as a qualifier for the 2018 Women's World championship.


Nigerian team will be featuring alongside other countries such as the host, Cameroon, Algeria, Ghana and Cape Verde. Others are Egypt, Botswana, Tunisia, Chad, Congo DR, Kenya, Zambia and Senegal.


Speaking with journalists after a training at the indoor sports hall of Abuja National stadium, the Head coach, Usman Abdalah said the players are in good shape and ready to do the nation proud by winning the ticket for the 2018 women world Championship.


The President of the Federation, Eng Musa Nimrod who appreciated the players & coaches for their endurance & perseverance so far in camp promised the federation's continued support for the team until the dream of winning the world cup ticket is realised.


Members of the technical committee led by chairman, Martin Melandi and the scribe of the Federation, Adamu Maikano were also on hand to monitor the level of preparation and readiness of the team for the continental tournament.


The Nigerian women's volleyball team qualified for the finals of African Nations Championship after they won the held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.


Nigeria beat Ghana and the host country, Cote d'Ivoire in the qualifiers. The Usman Abdalah tutored team walloped its arch rival Ghana 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-7) in the first match and then went ahead to defeat the host country also 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-20) in the second match to qualify to the finals.


The coach of the team, Usman Abdalah who was visibly happy lauded the players for their display of gallantry, dedication and patriotism.


The coach who appreciated the federation led by the president, Eng Musa Nimrod for its supports before, during & after the continental tournament promised to do the nation proud at the world tournament.


Reacting, the president of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Eng MUSA Nimrod on behalf of the board congratulated the team for the laudable achievement describing them as worthy ambassadors of our great country, Nigeria.
