Alfred/Doobraz and Bassy/Durhonne first winners of Orangina Beach Cup in Mauritius

22 December 2017

Mauritius, December 20, 2017- The 2017 Mauritius Volleyball Federation "MVBA" Orangina Summer Beach Volleyball Cup saw Gilbert Alfred and Akash Doobraz on men's side, and Maita Bassy and Heidy Durhonne, on the ladies side, crowned as champions of this first edition.

The last Beach Volley competition of Mauritius of 2017 was held last Sunday at Flic en Flac and the Mauritius Volley Federation welcomed for this occasion a new sponsor.

Beaten in the final of the 2017 National League by Eric Louise and Evans Sauteur, the pair Alfred and Doobraz, had subsequently taken his revenge in the final of the Republic Cup last March. The opportunity was beautiful for one of the two pairs either to dominate each other one.

In the group stage with 14 teams participating, the two favorites have no problem to pass this course to end up in the quarterfinals. Against Fabrice Henry and Gilbert Richard, Louise and Sauteur won in two sets (15-10, 15-11) before finding in semi-finals Bertrand Samoisy and Yannick Bouti whom they also eliminated in 2 sets (21- 10, 21-8).

For their part, Alfred and Doobraz did not make any mistake against Nicolas Laurette and Nicolas Dupuoy (15-8, 15-8) but found in Olivier Harel and Adam Augustin, two tough opponents in the semifinals. It was after hard struggle that they were able to get rid of their opponent without fearing the worst in the first set (24-22, 21-18).

It was a mano to mano between the two finalists at the beginning of the first set and no one wanted to let go. It is at the end of the set that Alfred and Doobraz took the lead for a narrowly win by 21-18. Wanting to maintain their supremacy at all costs, the defending champions started the following set with a flourish taking no less than four points ahead. But Gilbert Alfred and Akash Doobraz wanted to finish in beauty 2017 and it was finally after 30 minutes of play that they won the second set by 29-27.

In the ladies' competition, in the absence of the champion pair Vanessa Chellumben and Ange Ramdoss, Maita Bassy and Heidy Durhonne emerged.

Six teams took part in this competition and the duo Bassy / Durhonne qualified for the final after they beat the pair Liza Bonne and Stacy Armoogum, ranked No.1 for the occasion, in the semi-final in two sets (15 -8, 15-9). On their side, Felicia Julie and Valentine Paul got rid of Stéphanie Lousie and Rachel Christine also in two sets (15-11, 15-11).

In the final, it was not without difficulty that Bassy and Durhonne dominated Julie and Paul after a catchy first set (21-19) to finally win the second set 21-11 easily.

This first edition of 2017 MVBA Orangina Summer Beach Volleyball Cup took place under the leadership of the President of the Beach Volley Commission and 1st vice-president of MVBA, Jean-Michel Dedans and in the presence of the President of MVBA Faysal Bundhun and of the new volleyball technical director, Zoran Kovacic of Croatia.
