Nigeria’s Sports Minister receives CAVB President Elwani and NOC

19 September 2018

Abuja, Nigeria, September 18, 2018- President of Confederation of Africa Volleyball (CAVB), Dr Amr Elwani urged Nigeria government to invest more in volleyball grassroots in order to produce qualify players in the future in his meeting with the Nigerian Minister of Sports Mr Barrister Solomon Dalung in his office in Abuja on Tuesday during the Men's U21 African Nations Championship.

He praised the Nigeria U19 boys for winning gold at the Africa Youth Games in Algiers early in July, as well as qualifying to the World Championship next year despite not having much playing time before the tournament. Elwani stated that Africa will host two World Championships in Egypt and Tunisia in 2019.

“CAVB was established strategically to develop grassroots volleyball and we have succeeded in doing that. Nigeria has been absent at various international tournament before now but Musa Nimrod ensured Nigeria returned back to her previous glory.

The Nigeria U19 boys won gold at the 2018 Africa Youth Games in Algiers, the U20 girls placed 4th in Kenya and now the U21 finished 5th at the Men’s Africa Championship hosted in Nigeria. This is a good step in the right direction and I’m appealing to the country to support the U19 team before the World championship and give proper attention to volleyball in Nigeria”.

“Our aim is to see Africa host World championships across the respective underage categories. Last year, Cameroon hosted the Grand Prix while Egypt hosted the U23 World Volleyball Championship. By 2019, Egypt and Tunisia will also host underage World Championships”, he said.

Nigeria’s sports minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung pledged that the Federal Government will support the Nigeria Volleyball Federation ahead of the U19 World Championship next year.

“We’ll continue to accord volleyball the necessary support and cooperation, because only our support can instigate rapid development of the game
