Women's African Club Championship becomes a reality for Uganda's Ndejje University

30 March 2013

Kampala, Uganda, March 29, 2013- Sixteen weeks ago, it was just a dream that the Ugandan club Ndejje Elites would be at the Women's African Club Championship in Madagascar next month. Now, with State Minister for Sports Charles Bakkabulindi flagging off the team yesterday at Lugogo.

However, the side’s coach Johnson Kawenyera has warned fans against high expectations on the side that are making their maiden appearance at the competition.

“I would be lying if I promised to return (as) champions, but we have targets...,” Kawenyera said. “...to be in the top eight and all the girls are eager to see that come to pass,” he added. Kawenyera has been behind Ndejje success since last year when he guided them to five titles including the maiden league crown.

“It gives you an edge when you play against teams like KAVC, Nkumba and KCC who have players that have been at these games,” Kawenyera added. Ndejje have followed last year’s form with the East African University Games first gold medal last month in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

They have won the Makerere and Ndejje Open institutions titles and the latter’s club’s crown last weekend. “We have prepared well, I’m confident that my team will make a statement in Madagascar, we won’t be caught by surprise,” assured Kawenyera.

Bakabulindi, the minister, urged the girls to put up their best performances. “You are not representing Ndejje University but Uganda as a country,” he said. “The trophy might be hard to come your way, but you can fly the Uganda flag high in many aspects. Please keep it up there,” he added. Kenya Prisons are the defending champions after they defeated Pipeline 3-0 at last year’s final in Nairobi.
