Pipeline and Ahly to write new history at Women's African Club Champs final

5 April 2015

Cairo, Egypt, April 5, 2015- In an expected big show for women's African Volleyball, giants Kenya Pipeline and Egypt's Ahly meet on Sunday at 20:00 local time in the 2015 Women's African Club Championship final at 6 October Hall in Cairo, Egypt.

Pipeline and  Ahly are without a doubt the most successful female volleyball clubs when it comes to winning titles on the continent.

The two sides have played in the finals of the African Women Clubs Championship a record 12 times each, Pipeline have won seven of those while Al Ahly have managed six.

At the 2015 edition in Cairo Egypt, both sides qualified for a record 13th final, Pipeline their first since 2012 while Al Ahly were last seen in the final in 2009.

On their way to the finals, Al Ahly won the five set thriller in a tiebreaker against Carthage Tunisia 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-11).

Pipeline also fought for 127 minutes to clinch a tough victory against Shams and needed a decisive set to overcome the Egyptians 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14) in the other semifinal.

The meeting between Pipeline and Al Ahly on Sunday will be the seventh for the two sides to face off in the finals. The first being in 1998, then Kenya Pipeline came out on top.

Al Ahly had their revenge in 2003, then at their own backyard when they also won the round robin format as Pipeline settled for silver.

Pipeline won the 2005 edition in Nairobi Kenya in straight sets before Al Ahly answered back with a 3-1 win in Cairo in 2007.The last time Al Ahly were in the finals they defeated Kenya Commercial Bank 3-1 in Nairobi in 2009.

Between 2010 and 2013, it was about Pipeline and Kenya Prisons, the former winning all those, but they failed to make it at this year’ edition because of final constraints.

A win on for Al Ahly will put them one away from equaling Pipeline's seven, while the former also wants to stretch the tally to eight.

While Pipeline will be looking for their eighth title as a club, Kenya as a country will be chasing their 14th. Al Ahly and Egypt are searching for their sixth.
