Algeria and Egypt through to semifinal of Men's African Championship

Cairo, Egypt, July 24, 2015- Hosts Egypt and Algeria became the first two teams to secure semifinal tickets at 2015 Men's African Nations Championship after both teams marked the second straight sets victory over Botswana and Algeria respectively in Day three of the competition held at Cairo Stadium Complex on Friday.

 

 Egypt topped Botswana 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-10), while Algeria overcame the Kenyan come back in the second set to win 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-23). Now Egypt led the pool with the point quotient ahead of Algeria , both with 2-0 and 6 points followed by Kenya and Botswana with 0 pts from 0-2.

 

 Morocco complicated the situation in the strong Pool B after they hammered Cameroon 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 30-28, 25-21) in a thrilling encounter showing unbelievable performance from the Moroccan opposite Mohamed Hachdadi. Tunisia overcame Mauritius easily 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-7) in the other pool match. Morocco led the pool with 6 points from 2-0, followed by Cameroon 5 points from 2-1 and Tunisia 4 points from 1-1, then Rwanda 3 points from 1-1 and finally Mauritius 0-3.

 

The African championship acts as a qualifier for the 2015 FIVB Men's World Cup in Japan September 8 to 23, 2015 as the top two teams will secure their tickets to the prestigious event. 

 

 The competition will be resumed on Saturday with 4 matches in both pools. Pool A features Algeria v Egypt for the top of the pool and Kenya to face Botswana for the third position, In Pool B Rwanda face Tunisia and Morocco line up against Mauritius

 

Pool A

Algeria v Kenya 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-23))

 

Algeria overcame the solid Kenya team 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-23) in Pool A match lasting 86 minutes. With this victory Algeria improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0  to secure a semifinal ticket of Pool A, while Kenya dropped to 0-2.

 

 Opposite spiker Toufik Mahdjoubi and outside hitter Mohamed Chikhi led the scorers for the winners, while Michael Chemos led Kenya and match scorers with 17 points.

 

 The Kenyan team were very competitive to the Algerians specially in the second set that showed the best rallies of the match, but the experience of the Algerian hitters settled the situation to their side at the end.

 

Egypt v Botswana 3-0  (25-19, 25-14, 25-10)

 

Egypt played with most of the substitutes, but succeeded to overpower Botswana 3-0  (25-19, 25-14, 25-10) in 63 minutes. Egypt improved to 2-0, while Botswana dropped to 0-2. Egypt's coach played with all the list as opposite Ahmed Kotb finished as best scorer from his side with 15 points, while Kabo Moetse finished as best Botswana scorer.

 

Pool B

Tunisia  v Mauritius 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-7)

 

 Record holders Tunisia recovered from opening loss against Cameroon to cruise past Mauritius 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-7) in Pool B. Tunisia improved their record to 1-1 in 2 matches, while Mauritius dropped to 0-3.

 

 The Tunisian coach Fathi Mkaouer played with some substitutes who didn't play in the first match like Hichem Kaabi and Ismail Moalla to give a new breeze to the team. The Tunisian overwhelmed the net action through their tight block who succeeded to gain 12 kill blocks against 4 for the Mauritians.

 

 Hichem Kaabi led Tunisian scorers with 16 points, while Kevin Larose was the best for the Mauritian side was Kevin Larose with only 4 points.

 

Cameroon v Morocco 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 30-28, 25-21)

 

Morocco upset Cameroon 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 30-28, 25-21) in one of the competition most exciting encounter lasting 129 minutes. Moroccan opposite spiker Mohamed Hachdadi marked 27 points making the second best scoring performance in the competition so far to conduct his team to the valuable victory. Jean Ndaki was as usual Cameroon best scorer as he contributed 22 points for his team.

 

 With the win Morocco improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0, while Cameroon became 2-1 to complicate the pool 2 days before the end of the first round. the 2013 bronze medallists played aggressively specially in serving and achieved 4 aces that helped Morocco to control the match.
