Nigeria set the Pace, Egypt won the North Africa Derby against Morocco at Women's Continental Cup

2016 CAVB Women's Continental Cup

 

 Abuja, Nigeria, April 14, 2016- The CAVB continental cup Women’s finals kicked off on Thursday at Jabi Lake beach in Abuja, Nigeria. In the opening games on Day one, The Mauritius beach volleyball team beat Ghana 2-1 at the continental cup Women beach volleyball finals in Abuja.  

 

 Angelique Ramdoss and Vanessa Chellumben won 21-14, 21-18 over Matha Bavon and Gifty Adeza in the golden game following a tie.  The first game between the two countries saw Mauritius running riot against Ghanaian Pairs of Gloria Adda and Patricia Habada 21-12 and the same score emerged in the second set, however Ghanaian pairs of Matha Bavon and Gifty Adeza got hold on Angelique Ramdoss and Vanessa Chellumben to set the match to a Golden game which Mauritius eventually won.

 

Namibian Youngsters Julia, Laggner and Jim Seeback overcame their opponents in hard fought golden game encounter. The match was a one-way street with the Nambians mauling their opponents. They finished every match in straight sets, with the most dominant performance of the day coming on set 2 where, the German base pairs of Julia, Laggner and Jim Seeback won 21-16, 21-13.

 

3 years ago, The Gambia women beach volleyball team was languishing with a mediocre record of in the continent of Africa. Fast forward to today and the team has racked up 15 wins and zero loses. Not only does Gambia have a winning record, it is also internationally ranked 16th by CAVB. That record was broken on Thursday when fellow West Africans Sierra Leone and host Nigeria beat Gambia in their opening games of the continental cup finals currently underway in Abuja. The Gambia first lost to Salone ladies in a tied encounter that was determined in the Golden game which Sierra Leone won 2-1.

 

Nigerian rounded off a memorable day in program history as they were victorious in all 4 matches that it played on day one, following the victory over Mauritius the host overcame Gambia in an easy game. This matchup had even more excitement in store for the African champions on the beach.

 

Egypt won the North Africa derby in comfortable style against the towering Morocco. Egypt also showcased their brilliant serving and passing game in the match. Throughout the game, Egyptian players have been able to control the matchups with their adept passing play. The players utilize their passes to set up point-winning spikes and this aspect of the game has been improving steadily, especially in the finishing department.
