016 CAVB Women's Continental Cup
Abuja, Nigeria, April 17, 2016- Egypt claimed their first ever gold at beach Volleyball competition as they beat Rwanda 2-1 in the final of the CAVB Continental Cup to book a ticket to Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Doaa Elghobashy and Lamies Nossier had stunned Rwanda to settle the 2016 CAVB continental Cup Women beach volleyball Final in Egypt's favor, crowning the North Africans as champions at Jabi Lake in Abuja, Nigeria on Sunday.
Nigeria beat Mauritius 2-0 in the Bronze medal match. the Silver medalist Rwanda and bronze medalist Nigeria will play at the World Cup qualifications. Two teams from each confederation will meet at that stage, where two tickets will be on auction for grab.
Egypt pairs settled a tie that was in the balance from the first minute until the last with a finish of startling composure given the circumstances, pressure and surroundings. Egypt team A beat the Rwanda team B 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) with the hopes of completing the double against Rwandan team A, however a naturally frenetic beginning to the encounter brought an early sight of dominance for Rwandan team with Charlotte Nzatisenga becoming her team highest scorer, but also the brilliance of Denyse Mutatsimpundu paid dividend of conquering the Egyptians with two straights sets (21-9, 21-18).
When the two sides returned after the break for the Golden Game, both coaches presented the best for this once a life time opportunity, and the game was decided on a change. Egypt started the brighter too. Trademark movement from both teams, the Egyptians remain focus, Rwandans attacked with prowess. With each passing minute, the match became increasingly stretched, with neither team yielding in their attacking ambitions. When the first set was done, it was in Egypt’s favor 21-19. Close and great second set followed in the ephemeral with Rwanda scoring from intelligent spikes.
When the set was tied at closing stages, nerved moments appeared from the North Africans side, their brilliance was what they need to cool off the set and 21-19 they did to earn a direct ticket to the Olympics.
Bronze Medal Match
Host Nigeria stunned 2012 African representatives in the Olympics Games Mauritius 2-0 to redeem their pride as host in the CAVB continental cup finals. Nigeria lost to Egypt in the semifinals, while Mauritius were beaten by Rwanda in the other semifinal on Saturday.
Nigeria easily see them off in the games, winning Mauritius team A two sets to nil (21-15, 21-15) the defeat was further increased when the Nigerian pairs of Agera Priscilla and Eyetsonetan Isabella Laju overcame Angelique Ramdoss and Vanssa Chellumben two sets to nil (21-10, 21-16).
