Senegal book last semis ticket as Cameroon upset Egypt in early final

2017 Women's African Nations Championship- Day 5



 Yaoundé, Cameroon, October 11, 2017- Senegal booked the fourth and the last semifinal ticket after Cameroon, Kenya and Egypt at the 2017 Women's African nations Championship after they beat Nigeria 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) in Pool A in the last day of the preliminary round of the competition at Palais des Sports in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Thursday.


 In what is described as an early final, Cameroon aided by full house of thrilled spectators topped Egypt 3-1 (20-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-18) in the top of Pool A decider to gain 9 points out of their three matches from a win- loss ratio of 3-0. Egypt finished second of the pool with 2-1 record and 6 points as both teams already qualified to semifinal.


 Algeria finished third of Pool A after the first competition victory over Botswana 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-12, 15-8) to leave the losers at the bottom of the pool.


 Tunisia overcame their disappointment by a second win against Congo RD 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20) in Pool B, but they couldn't catch the semifinal after Senegal's victory over Nigeria.


 Kenya who was in a rest day led Pool B with 4-0 ratio, followed by Senegal 3-1 as both teams qualified to the semis, followed by Tunisia third with 2-2. Nigeria came fourth with 1-3, while RD Congo finished winless with 0-4 to finish 9th and last in the standings.


 Thursday will be a rest day, before the semifinals will take place on Friday as defending champions Kenya meet Egypt in the first match at 16:00 local time, followed by hosts Cameroon against Senegal at 18:00.


The tournament doubles as the African Women’s Championship and the top two will qualify for FIVB World Championship in Japan 2018, which runs from September 29-October 20.
