Cameroon thrill to beat Kenya for first African title

2017 Women's African Nations Championship- Final

 

 

 Yaoundé, Cameroon, October 14, 2017- Cameroon Women's Volleyball team printed their name for first time in the Women's African Nations title holders after they beat Kenya 3-0 () in the final of the competition in front of 6000 fans at Palais des Sports in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Saturday.

 

 After the final CAVB Control Committee headed by Jean Claude Mopita along with the Kenya Minister of Sport Bidoung Mkpatt and the Sports Ambassador of Cameroon the football icon Roger Milla honoured the home team with the gold medals and Kenya with the silver.

 

 Egypt captured the bronze medal after they beat Senegal 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23) in the third place match.

 

 Both Cameroon and Kenya already confirmed their qualification berth to the 2018 FIVB World Championship in Japan as first and second of Africa.

 

 This is the first ever title for Cameroon women in 15 participations out of 18 competitions until now. They finished second twice in 1999 and 2013 and were 6 times bronze medallists.

 

 Kenya failed to add their 10th title, but still have a marvelous record of gaining 9 trophies out of 18 played till now making 50 % victories.

 

 In the ranking matches, Tunisia overcame their North African Neighbours Algeria 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) in a thrilling encounter to get the 5th position. Nigeria in their first participation since 10 years hammered Botswana 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14) in the 7th place encounter.  

 

Final Results

7-8 Places: Nigeria v Botswana 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14). More

5-6 Places: Tunisia v Algeria 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16). More

Bronze Medal: Egypt v Senegal 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23). More

Final: Kenya v Cameroon 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 29-27). More
